Their Eyes Were Watching God was an excellent movie to be show in an African American Women's studies class. It shows how backin that time period(1920's) black women were very submissive to their husbands. They really did not have a "say so". All they did was domestic work around the house and catered to their husbands. For example, Janie married Joe at a very young age, while joe was already in his 50's. He was very mean and was always working. Janie was not happy and nor was she in love. Joe was kind of abusive when things did not go his way. One day he even hit her infront a group of people because she embarrased her. As time passed, (20years), janie was realy tired of the lifestyle she was living. Unfortunately, joe gets sick and dies.Fortunately he leaves he money. Not long after his death, she meets Tea Cake. He's really yonger than she is. Janie and all the town thinks that he is only after her for the money. However, Tea Cake really loves her. Janie then begins to find happiness. Her and Tea Cake Take trips and even have picnics on a dail basis. After time passes, they go to the Everglades. After a storm, Tea Cake gets bit by rabees. The rabees stared to make him think and act crazy. He attempts to kill her with a gun, but she shoots first. All in all, this movie shows how Black women were controlled and really did not have a say so. However, they do have the choice to break away, find happiness and create their own self identity and worth.
