"The Pretty Girl Rock"-Kerri Hilson

Todays women are totally diffrent from the women in the 1920's. The women of today are strong black women who know that they are beautiful. For example. Kerri Hilson make a video and the main point was that she is pretty and does not care about what others think. In the video she shows dresses up as other beautiful black women such as the women of T.L.C, Beyonce, Mary J. Blidge and more. She also dressed up like women did back in the 1920's. This video proves that black women of todat have higher self esteem and self worth.

"All eyes on me when I walk in,
No question that this girl's a 10
Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful
Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful
My walk, my talk, the way I drip
It's not my fault, so please don't trip
Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful
Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful"

Should Black Women be submissive to their men?...

In the 1920, women were known for being submissive. All they did was domestic work and took care of thier children and husbands.

I dont think there is anything wrong with being submissive just as long as the husband dosent go overboard... I also found this topic interesting because we talked about this at church on Sunday. My pastor said that the man she be the head of household, and the woman should follow.

*This is an article that i found interesting! It wouldnt let me post the entire article so i copied and pasted it. The link is at the bottom also.

I am the owner of two dating websites for black singles and I still find myself single! (www.nycblacksingles.com and www.dmvblacksingles.com). So…about a few months ago, I was telling one of my close friends about an issue that I was facing with a man that I was dating (and yes we all tell our girls our business, so get over it). I was telling her how pissed I was because at the end of our argument, he told me “sometimes I need to just shut up and let a man be a man.” Of course, what he really meant was that as a female, I need to back down and be submissive sometimes, while as a man, he should have the last word. After I finished going off, and complained to my friend that he was still living in the 1920’s, my friend kindly forwarded me a youtube video.

In this youtube video a black woman suggests that we need to “Step back and let your man lead and be a man.” Women need to embrace the traditional roles of womanhood in a relationship—taking care of the home, cooking, taking care of children, loving and uplifting our men. She also kindly suggests that men aren’t off the hook and their traditional roles are to “protect, provide, conquer and provide a home for women to nurture.”

I would completely feel the message of the clip, except for one thing…Its 2009! Traditional roles just don’t make sense in our times. Women are not in the workforce working the same 9-5 that men do. What these traditional roles do is give women all of the work and men all of the benefit. I mean think about it, in the 1920’s, women could do all that stuff…why? Because they sat their behinds at home all day watching their 1900s soap operas. But now, it just doesn’t make sense. You mean I have to work the same 9-5 you do and in addition, be a cook, a chef, a personal maid and a mute? While the man does what exactly? Oh yeah, conquer, protect and provide…. Let’s discuss each of these, just so that I’m clear.

1. Conquer- Its 2009, what exactly are you conquering? The remote?!
2. Protect- Maybe this was more relevant when we lived in the wilderness with lions, tigers and bears, but not now. I don’t know about the rest of you ladies, but I haven’t exactly been in the need of protection so far.
3. Provide- Wait, aren’t we both doing this?

So, I guess my point is…this traditional submission idea, simply doesn’t have its place in the 21st century. It gives us all of the burden of being in a relationship and none of the benefits

" Good Hair"- The Chris Rock Documentary

Chris Rock makes a documentary about "Good Hair" and the how much African American women value their hair. He talks about the perms, the waves and more. He interviews celeberties and ask them about their and how much they pay for their weaves. These prices were unbelievably high. There's a stereoptye out that perms are better than going natural and that un-straighned hair makes u look like a slave. This doc. is very interesting to watch...Black women do go to through the EXTREME to make theirr hair look pretty and it comes with a big price!

" Madam C.J. Walker"

Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919) was an entrepreneur and a social activist. We discussed her in class and i found her story to be so interesting. Madam Walker started many beauty parlors and gave many women jobs. She invinted products for black hair and scalp. She was the FIRST black woman millionaire. She donated to schools. And after her death, she left money to charaties. She contributed A lot to Afican American Women.

“I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations….I have built my own factory on my own ground.” Madam Walker, National Negro Business League Convention, July 1912

" I Am Not My Hair"- India Arie

This songs states that a person's hair and apperance dosent make them who they are. Its not whats on top of your head but whats in your head.

Quotes: " I am not My Hair, I am not my skin"
" Good Hair means CURLS AND WAVES, Bad Hair means you look like A SLAVE"

" Im not the Average GIrl" -India Arie

This song is really touching. India loves herself for who she is. She loves all her features, especially her skin color. The chorus of this song says " Im not the Average girl form the video and I aint built like a super model. I learned to love myself unconditionally...because i am a queen"

She also states that her mother says that a lady is a lady because of what she knows ans not how she looks! This song is has a great inspirational message for women.

Is black really not Beautiful???? ...Nahhh, it Really is!

I was watching BET and this station did a news brief on a psycology magazine article that basicly said that back women were ugly. I found this intereasting so i decided to do more research. The article was recently taken down beacuse of its negative reviews...The person who wrote it also apoligized!
In the Magazine, Psychology Today, A Psychologist wrote an atricle saying that black women were less attractive. BET was very offended! However,Famous black women speak out on what beauty means to them

"Their Eyes Were Watching God"

Their Eyes Were Watching God was an excellent movie to be show in an African American Women's studies class. It shows how backin that time period(1920's) black women were very submissive to their husbands. They really did not have a "say so". All they did was domestic work around the house and catered to their husbands. For example, Janie married Joe at a very young age, while joe was already in his 50's. He was very mean and was always working. Janie was not happy and nor was she in love. Joe was kind of abusive when things did not go his way. One day he even hit her infront a group of people because she embarrased her. As time passed, (20years), janie was realy tired of the lifestyle she was living. Unfortunately, joe gets sick and dies.Fortunately he leaves he money. Not long after his death, she meets Tea Cake. He's really yonger than she is. Janie and all the town thinks that he is only after her for the money. However, Tea Cake really loves her. Janie then begins to find happiness. Her and Tea Cake Take trips and even have picnics on a dail basis.  After time passes, they go to the Everglades. After a storm, Tea Cake gets bit by rabees. The rabees stared to make him think and act crazy. He attempts to kill her with a gun, but she shoots first. All in all, this movie shows how Black women were controlled and really did not have a say so. However, they do have the choice to break away, find happiness and create their own self identity and worth.

" The Colored girl"

“The Colored Girl”
The part of the reading that caught my attention was the second paragraph of page 154. It starts off by stating that colored girls want to be respected and believed in. Colored girls have endured so much in their past history that just being respected as a human being that can stated her opinion on issues was very desirable. They really want to be respected by people who considered themselves better than her (ie.white men and women) and also by the men of their own race.  Towards the end of the paragraph it states than colored men really do not appreciate or uplift African American Women. It also states that colored women want men to take a stand and start appreciating and valuing their colored women and show them some support. On the Whole, African American women struggle in many ways and fight just to be accepted and African American men should fight just as hard for their women.

Sara Baartman - The Hottentot Venus"

The movie that we watched in class was very interesting. Sara Baartman's strory was very interesting. At the age of twenty she was taken to Africa. In my opinion, i think she did not like her stay over there. She was promised to return home after 6 years but was denied it. While in Britian, She was viewed as Un-human,a creature and a freak. People stared at her. They studied her because she was was so different from them. She was observed sexually and physically . They even took her sexual parts out as well as her brain and displayed them even after she died.(jan.1816) This goes to show that even after she died, she was still being exploited. All in all, this movie was very interesting and it gives views of how Europeans viewed her and her physical features.

*This could be compared to African American Women today. They are always being exploited in certain ways, because of their bodies*
